Famed British art feared lost in fire

LONDON, May 26 (UPI) -- Some of Britain's most famous contemporary art may have been lost in a London warehouse fire, it was reported Wednesday.

A fire destroyed a 10,000 square foot storage facility in Leyton, East London, early Monday morning, where millions of dollars worth of art was stored by collector Charles Saatchi, the Times of London said.

The items reportedly lost included pieces from the Buckingham Palace and Royal Academy collections, Tracey Emin's tent titled "Everyone I Have Ever Slept With" and

Jake and Dinos Chapman's "Hell," for which Saatchi reportedly paid $875,000, the Times said.

Saatchi also handles art for foreign museums, including the Smithsonian Institution and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

"It is terrible," said Saatchi's spokesman. "A significant part of the work in his collection has been affected. We are hoping it is not as bad as early reports suggested."
