ABC drops comedies, adds drama for fall

NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- ABC, the fourth-ranked network in the United States, axed several comedies and scheduled a drama-heavy fall lineup, it was reported Tuesday.

ABC ordered only two new sitcoms, both likely to air Friday night, and dropped "I'm With her," "It's All Relative," "Married to the Kellys" and "Life With Bonnie," USA Today reported.

The new sitcoms are "The Savages," about a widower and five unruly sons, and "That's Just Rodney," starring comedian Rodney Carrington.

The network passed on comedies starring Jessica Simpson, John Stamos and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

ABC will premiere four dramas, with three others set for midseason launch.

Topping ABC's new dramas is "Fleet Street," a "Practice" spinoff starring James Spader and William Shatner.

Other dramas include "Lost," about a Survivor-style group marooned on an island; "Desperate Housewives," about sex and lies of suburban women; "Life As We Know It, a coming-of-age show about three Seattle teens; and "Gray's Anatomy," about female surgical residents.
