CHICAGO, May 14 (UPI) -- U.S. broadcast legend Floyd Kalber has died from emphysema at the age of 79, Chicago's WLS-TV reported Friday.
Kalber, who died at his suburban Chicago home Thursday, retired from ABC in 1998 after a career that spanned five decades.
Kalber started in broadcasting in Nebraska back in 1946 and three years later found himself working in television, where he wrote and anchored the news at KMTV in Omaha.
Floyd's no-nonsense delivery and style landed him in Chicago, but he later left the Windy City for New York and the "Today Show" with Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley.
In 1984, Kalber began his news anchoring career at WLS-TV. He retired in 1998. The five-time Emmy award winner is in the Chicago journalism hall of fame and the silver circle of the Chicago TV academy.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty, a son and daughter and six grandchildren.
