ABC to film 'Once Upon a Mattress'

LOS ANGELES, May 14 (UPI) -- Tony Award nominee Kathleen Marshall has been hired to direct and choreograph a U.S. television version of "Once Upon a Mattress."

Marshall was nominated earlier this week for two Tonys for her work on Broadway's "Wonderful Town."

The ABC version of "Once Upon a Mattress," a musical take on the "Princess and the Pea" story, will star Carol Burnett as the conniving Queen Aggravain, Playbill On-Line reported Friday.

The film will mark Marshall's small-screen directorial debut, although she previously provided the choreography for a 2003 TV version of "The Music Man," starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth.

Media reports said "Hairspray" star Marissa Jaret Winokur will play the central "Mattress" role of Princess Winnifred, which Burnett originated on stage and subsequently played in 1964 and 1972 TV films.

Marshall, however, could not confirm the report to Playbill On-Line.
