C-Murder gets new slaying trial

NEW ORLEANS, April 14 (UPI) -- A New Orleans judge has refused bail for rapper C-Murder even though his murder conviction was overturned.

Judge Martha Sassone would not let C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, out on bond because he is wanted on attempted murder charges in Baton Rouge, The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported.

A Jefferson Parish jury convicted Miller of second-degree murder in September in the 2002 death of 16-year-old Steve Thomas. But, Sassone overturned the verdict and ordered a new trial last week, saying prosecutors should have told Miller's attorneys and the jury some witnesses had criminal records.

Prosecutor Doug Freese said he did not have the information because the witnesses' records had been expunged.

On Monday, Freese told Sassone he would appeal her ruling and revealed for the first time publicly that Miller is also charged with battery of a correctional officer in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

When Thomas was killed, Miller was out on bond for the 2001 Baton Rouge incident, in which he allegedly misfired a gun at a club owner and bouncer.
