NEW YORK, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Robert Harling's beloved play "Steel Magnolias" will debut on New York's Broadway in the 2004-2005 season, the show's producers announced Friday.

An off-Broadway hit in 1987, "Steel Magnolias" played 1,126 performances at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, following a short run at the WPA Theatre. Selected as one of The Best Plays of 1987-1988 by the prestigious theater yearbook of the same name, "Steel Magnolias" has since been performed in hundreds of productions around the world and was the basis of a star-studded 1989 film.

The new production of the play will be directed by Jason Moore, currently represented on Broadway with "Avenue Q."
