Private eye pilots dominating

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Private investigators are making a comeback as U.S. networks place several detective dramas on the schedule for next fall.

One of the highest-profile contenders is Warner Brothers TV's "City of Dreams" on NBC, which will star Jimmy Smits, about a slick L.A. private investigator who specializes in fixing problems for ritzy clients.

"Lighthearted fare is clearly ruling the roost thus far," said Peter Roth, Warner Bros. Television president, about next season's new programming. "The detective drama is emerging with panache."

The shift to lighter programming differs from recent years when hard-core police dramas, such as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" ruled.
