13 killed in Iraq attacks

BAGHDAD, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Three U.S. soldiers and nine Iraqis were killed Saturday in separate attacks by Iraqi insurgents in northern Iraq, reports said.

The American casualties fell when a roadside bomb exploded at the passage of a U.S. military patrol between the city of Tikrit and the oil-center of Kirkuk north of Baghdad.

In the city of Mosul, 450 kilometers north of Baghdad, a suicide bomb detonated a booby-trapped car near a police station killing nine people and wounding tens of others, including Iraqi policemen.

Eyewitnesses said the suicide bomber managed to get through several roadblocks at the entrance of the police station before the car exploded in the crowded area.

The suicide attack is the second of its king in Iraq in less than a week and it came on the eve of the Muslim al-Adha feast. On Wednesday a suicide attack ripped through a Baghdad hotel killing five people and wounding 20 others.
