Fierstein to leave 'Hairspray'

NEW YORK, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Harvey Fierstein is leaving the hit Broadway musical "Hairspray" after almost two years of playing Edna Turnblad, Playbill On-Line reported.

Fierstein is expected to leave the show May 2, but no replacement for him has been announced.

With his departure, few original stars remain in the show. Most recently, Clarke Thorell and Matthew Morrison exited the show (as Corny and Link, respectively) Jan. 11, the Web site noted.

Comedian Bruce Vilanch plays the role of Edna in the national touring company of "Hairspray."
