Expensive Broadway New Year's flops

NEW YORK, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Plans for a $1,500-a-ticket New Year's Eve theater and dinner party including a performance of "The Producers" has been canceled due to lack of interest.

The tickets also bought attendees the chance to meet the show's stars, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

Advance plans for the performance at the St. James Theater and the dinner in the lobby of the Minskoff Theater had been made to accommodate at least 300 people and was announced only last Friday. A spokesman for the producers blamed slow ticket sales for the decision to call off the event.

Lane and Broderick, who have been out of the show for more than a year, are scheduled to rejoin the cast of the Tony Award-winning musical Dec. 30. The announcement last month of their return for a limited engagement set off a box-office frenzy.
