Liverpool, Memphis celebrate rock's 50th

LIVERPOOL, England, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Though an ocean apart, Liverpool, England, and Memphis will team up to celebrate rock 'n' roll's golden anniversary in 2004, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley's first recording, "That's All Right," at Memphis' legendary Sun Studio on July 5,1954.

Presley's influence on two of Liverpool's most famous sons, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, is well known, with the Beatles performing a secret concert at Presley's Bel Air, Calif., home in 1965.

When the director of the Fingerprints of Elvis museum in Liverpool's Albert Dock heard that Memphis had a celebration planned, he wanted to get involved.

"I contacted the tourism leader over there and said, 'There was more than one city so affected with rock 'n' roll,'" said Jerry Goldman, the museum's director. " ... We are now planning a whole host of celebrations for the partnership."

Highlights of the year will be Liverpool's Summer Pops season and the Mathew Street Festival.
