Russian oligarch underwrites U.S. exhibit

NEW YORK, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Russian billionaire Boris Jordan has underwritten a new exhibit at the New York Public Library titled "Russia Engages the World: 1453-1825."

Jordan contributed $1 million toward mounting the exhibit, according to a library source. It includes books, maps, manuscripts, prints and other displays that traces the interaction of Russia to other cultures since the end of Mogul domination. The library also disclosed that Jordan donated a rare Russian bible dated 1595 to the library's permanent collection.

Born in the United States to Russian parents, Jordan was an investor and investment banker who Russian President Vladimir V. Putin forced out as head of the media firm NTV.

Jordan returned to Russia in the early 1990s as a Credit Suisse banker when the Communist regime crumbled. He has supported libraries and youth orchestras in Russia and made donations to the Library of Congress in Washington. He has remained in Russia despite being out of favor with the Putin regime.

The exhibition will be on view through Jan. 31.
