Six land Brubeck jazz fellowships

STOCKTON, Calif., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck's alma mater has named six student musicians to 2003-04 fellowships at its Brubeck Institute.

The musicians will comprise the Brubeck Institute Jazz Sextet. They will represent the Institute in live performances and outreach activities. The institute was established in 2000 at the University of the Pacific, which is located in Brubeck's hometown.

The university library's Brubeck Collection, one of the world's largest personal jazz archives. It contains hundreds of Brubeck's compositions, original manuscripts, recordings, photos, writings, press clippings and memorabilia. It is accessible to students, scholars and fans.

The new Brubeck Fellows are tenor saxophonist Scott McGinty of Houston, Texas; alto saxophone and clarinet player Mark Zaleski of Boylston, Mass.; and pianist Tobin Chodos of Los Angeles. Returning for a second year are original Brubeck Fellows Anthony Coleman, a trumpeter from Sacramento, Calif., bassist Joe Sanders, of Milwaukee and drummer Justin Brown of Berkeley, Calif.
