WINDSOR, England, June 29 (UPI) -- British actor Hugh Grant and an anonymous businessman bid almost $1 million to dine with Elton John at one of London's premiere social events.
The White Tie and Tiara Ball raises money for Sir Elton John's AIDS foundation.
The dinner party that Grant won that will be hosted by John and long-time partner David Furnish was one of the major items on sale at the charity ball, held at John's mansion near Windsor Castle, The Melbourne Herald Sun reported.
Grant and the unnamed businessman began a bidding war that resulted in a deal.
The auctioneer told the Herald Sun, "(Grant) said he would bid $500,000 to bring five friends if the other bidder would bring five for $470,000."
"When it was agreed, there was absolute pandemonium," the auctioneer added.
