BABCOCK RANCH, Fla., April 10 (UPI) -- U.S. real estate developer Kitson & Partners announced an agreement with Florida Power & Light to build the world's first solar-powered city.
Babcock Ranch, Fla., will be powered by the largest solar photovoltaic power plant in the world, Kitson & Partners said.
The 17,000-acre city will be powered by the new FPL solar power plant. The plant is projected to create about 20,000 permanent jobs.
Babcock Ranch will also be home to an integrated smart grid, zero-emissions power and energy-efficient buildings.
"I believe clean energy and sustainable development are the future of the American economy," said Syd Kitson, chairman and chief executive of Kitson & Partners. "Babcock Ranch will be a living laboratory for companies, workers and families ready to reap the rewards of innovation."
The city will include 6 million square feet of retail, commercial, office, civic and light industrial space, along with wireless Internet access.
The project still must be approved by the state, but the company is hoping to break ground later this year and complete the project by the end of 2010.
