Brazil, Uruguay expand trade, energy

BRASILIA, Brazil, March 13 (UPI) -- During a recent visit of Uruguay's president to Brazil, the two nations agreed to increase cooperation on a number of issues, including energy.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suggested the two nations should work to address energy shortages and promised his state-owned oil and gas company Petrobras would increase its investments in Uruguay, the MercoPress news agency reports.

Silva announced his government would connect the Brazilian and Uruguayan electricity grids and a new power plant would be built in Rio Grande do Sul that would connect directly to San Carlos, Uruguay.

Both presidents agreed that now more than ever, with the economy being what it is, it is important for neighboring nations to work together.
