PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Energy and the Northwest Food Processors Association signed an agreement to set energy efficiency goals for the food processing industry.
Energy Department Industrial Technologies Program Manager Douglas Kaempf and Northwest Food Processors Association President David Zepponi signed a memorandum of understanding to reduce the industry's energy intensity by 25 percent over the next 10 years.
"The Northwest Food Processors show tremendous foresight by making this significant dedication to improve efficiency," said Kaempf. "The ability to do more with less is fundamental to bolstering our economy and creating a sustainable future for U.S. manufacturers."
The agreement will help to cut energy use and therefore cut emissions, which is part of the Energy Department's national goal.
Other industries that have worked with the Energy Department to cut use have saved an average of 8 percent of their total energy costs, the Energy Department reports.
