U.S., Canadian utilities study retrofits

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Five U.S. and Canadian utilities joined the United States' Electric Power Research Institute to study retrofitting coal plants with carbon capture technology.

The EPRI announced Edison Mission Group will host the study at its 1,536-megawatt station in Pekin, Ill.; Great River Energy will complete the study at its 1,100-megawatt station in Underwood, N.D.; Intermountain Power Agency will use its 950-megawatt station in Delta, Utah; and FirstEnergy will conduct its study at the 176-megawatt station in Oregon, Ohio.

In Canada, Nova Scotia Power will participate at its two 160-megawatt plants at its Lingan Generating Station in Lingan, Nova Scotia.

"Projects such as this, in which a number of utility companies come forward to offer their facilities and form a collaborative to share the costs of research, are critical to establishing real momentum for the technologies that we will need," said Bryan Hannegan, vice president of generation and environment at EPRI.

The five studies will be conducted during 2009, and each company will submit a report to EPRI that assesses the most practical configuration of the technology and the space and funding required, EPRI said.
