HASTINGS, Minn., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the nation's first hydrokinetic plant.
The power station will be built using technology from Hydro Green Energy LLC, the company announced, and will use hydrokinetic power from the Mississippi River to power the city of Hastings, Minn.
The hydrokinetic power is clean and emissions-free.
"The commission has made history with the Hastings Order. Hydro Green Energy fully applauds all of the commissioners for their leadership, as well as their commitment to ensuring that the United States enjoys a cleaner and more secure energy future," said Wayne F. Krouse, chairman and chief executive officer of Hydro Green Energy.
In the power station, electricity is generated from moving water flowing over a surface-suspended system to ensure a minimum eco-footprint.
