Russia, as the Soviet Union, began selling Turkey gas in 1984. Turkey privatized its gas-delivery sector and has since conducted bid for work previously conducted by state-owned Petroleum Pipeline Corporation BOTAS.

Russia sold Turkey 14.5 billion cubic meters of gas in 2004, more than 18 bcm in 2005 and around 20 bcm last year.

The new Gazprom deal is through 2021. The company will also have access to future Turkish gas projects.
