Siemens sells clean technology to U.S.

CHARLESTON, W.Va., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Siemens Power Generation announced it was awarded a contract to supply equipment for a new coal-fired power station in West Virginia.

The project will allegedly be one of the cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power plants in the United States. Longview Power LLC, a subsidiary of GenPower, is purchasing the equipment from the German power company. The order from Siemens is worth $405 million.

"Today, coal-generated electricity represents more than 50 percent of the generation capacity in the U.S. and 40 percent globally, and will continue to be an important fuel in the overall mix," said Randy Zwirn, president and chief executive officer of Siemens Power Generation Inc. "The Longview project demonstrates that coal-based generation utilizing highly efficient energy conversion technology and advanced emission controls can be compatible with the environment."

The technology uses ultra-supercritical steam conditions at a steam temperature just below 600 degree Celsius and a high pressure of approximately 250 bar, enable high plant efficiencies.

Construction is expected to begin in February and should be in operation by early 2011. Longview is expected to produce almost 700 megawatts of clean, coal-fired energy.
