Hungary: Renewable energy 'pipe dream'

BUDAPEST, Hungary, May 31 (UPI) -- A senior Hungarian official said Tuesday that renewable energy sources were a "pipe dream" and must be dispelled.

Gyoery Hatavni, the deputy state secretary in charge of energy, told Hungarian Kossuth Radio that Hungarian power stations were obsolete and that their modernization was inevitable. He hastened to add that it would be necessary to create a positive atmosphere for investors if the country was eager to modernize.

"The rose-tinted pipe dreams, which suggest that all energy problems will be solved with the renewables must be dispelled. Please, it will not be solved by them within the foreseeable future," Hatavni said.

"This is so, because all ways of using energy, in other words all energy technologies that use renewables, are still more expensive now than the energy technologies based on traditional sources," he said.
