Greenpeace scales London's Treasury

LONDON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Four environmental advocates climbed the London building housing the Treasury Department to demand a green investment bank, Greenpeace said.

Greenpeace said that four of its advocates climbed the Treasury Department building Tuesday to protest spending cuts expected to be announced by British Finance Minister George Osborne.

The advocates hung a banner from the building that read: "Remember George, Green bank = New jobs."

Greenpeace said that Osborne last year pledged to "deliver the green finance we need for new jobs in every region."

London's Guardian newspaper said the Treasury Department wants to set aside around $3.1 billion for the effort. Greenpeace said it needs $9.5 billion to be effective.

Greenpeace said on its Web site that the United Kingdom would lose its "low-carbon competitive advantage" without sufficient funding for the so-called green investment bank.

"Backing down on this now and cutting green budgets would severely dent this government's claims to be the greenest ever," said Emma Gibson, a Greenpeace campaigner who scaled the Treasury Department building Tuesday.
