EU calls for environmental review

BRUSSELS, July 6 (UPI) -- The European community needs to make sure its environmental policies are suitable and up to date for all countries in the European Union, a commissioner said.

The EU called for a regular review of its environmental policies to reflect new technology and new laws in the bloc.

Janez Potocnik, the EU commissioner for environment, said better environmental impact assessments are needed in the region to ensure policy and practice go hand in hand.

"So I am looking forward to input from all sides, allowing us to examine these issues carefully and to work out what new measures might be needed," the commissioner said.

Potocnik called for a review of environmental impact assessment procedures for cross-border development as well as those dealing climate change and biodiversity programs, the European government said.

The objective of the review is to generate new measures in European environmental policies in the sectors of climate change, energy and biodiversity. The review process runs through September.
