Iraqis review reconstruction bill

BAGHDAD, June 3 (UPI) -- The Iraqi Parliament Tuesday voted on a series of draft laws including salaries for civil servants and programs targeting national reconstruction.

The Tuesday session convened by Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani tabled several draft measures, including the first review of the reconstruction legislation and a second reading on biodiversity in the forestry industry, Voices of Iraq reported.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi election committee Monday approved a slate of 500 political bodies in the run-up to provincial elections scheduled tentatively for October, but shelved other considerations.

"The (Independent High Electoral Commission) faces technical and logistic problems which might hamper its work, mainly the delay in approving the elections law," committee member Judge Qassem al-Aboudi said.

The Iraqi government in April set aside $100 million to finance the election commission to oversee 2008 local elections.
