Worker dies at Canadian oil site

FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta, April 21 (UPI) -- Canadian oil company Suncor Energy confirmed one of its employees died as a result of a workplace accident at an oil sands site in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The Canadian energy company provided few direct details about a Sunday morning incident at its oil sands site in Alberta. An employee, whose name was withheld, died as a result of severe injuries suffered at the work place.

"This is devastating news and a tragic loss for family, friends and co-workers," Mark Little, executive vice president for upstream operations, said in a statement Sunday. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to loved ones during this extremely difficult time."

A spokesman for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety, Barrie Harrison, said in a separate statement the worker's injuries were a result of electrocution.

The incident is the second for Suncor in Alberta this year. A 40-year-old man was found dead in a pool of sand and water in January.

Suncor said in a statement it was working work authorities on the latest accident. A full investigation into the cause of the incident is under way.
