FARGO, N.D., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said getting the Keystone XL oil pipeline built from Canada would provide a long-term source of national energy security.
"The Keystone XL pipeline is a vital energy infrastructure project that will create 42,000 jobs and deliver 830,000 barrels of oil per day to U.S. refineries, including 100,000 barrels from the U.S. Bakken region of North Dakota and Montana," Hoeven said in Fargo Thursday.
Hoeven, a member of the Senate Energy Committee, said he is working to encourage the federal government to sign off on Keystone XL, which TransCanada plans to build from Alberta.
Keystone XL was proposed by TransCanada more than five years ago. The project needs federal approval as a cross-border pipeline.
Hoeven said the pipeline would bring more revenue to local, state and federal governments.
President Obama said he'd weigh the project against its environmental footprint. If built, the pipeline would run through Montana but not North Dakota.
