TOKYO, June 28 (UPI) -- A consortium of Japanese companies announced Friday preliminary equipment for an offshore windfarm near Fukushima has been completed.
A consortium led by trading company Marubeni Corp. and the University of Tokyo announced Phase 1 of the development of an experimental 2 megawatt floating wind farm project was completed.
Marubeni said a floating 66-kilovolt power sub-station for the facility is a first of its kind for the offshore wind energy industry.
"Part of Phase I has been successfully completed and [component] delivery to Fukushima has started today," the company said in statement.
The company said it would start laying undersea power cables to the mainland later this summer. The facility is expected to go online in October.
A magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in 2011. The Japanese government has since started looking for alternative power supplies to make up for the nuclear power deficit.
