Russian gas pipeline to Europe closed

WARSAW, Poland, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Consumers of natural gas sent through Poland shouldn't expect major disruptions in supplies because of a pipeline shutdown, a company said.

Russian energy company Gazprom announced the Yamal-Europe natural gas pipeline through Poland closed Tuesday for regular maintenance.

State-owned Polish Petroleum and Gas Mining said customers shouldn't face disruptions from the closure, which is expected to last about 40 hours.

A spokesman for the company told the Platts news service that customers were receiving gas according to supply contracts.

"This kind of pipeline maintenance takes place every year," the spokesman said. "Gas supplies from other entry points from the eastern direction will be received in the planned amounts."

The Polish energy company imported around 325 billion cubic feet of natural gas from Gazprom last year.

Maintenance work is planned for the pipeline section on the border of Poland and Belarus.
