COPENHAGEN, Denmark, July 20 (UPI) -- A Danish energy company announced it signed a framework agreement with Siemens for hundreds of 6-megawatt wind turbines.
Danish company DONG Energy announced it signed a framework agreement with Siemens Energy for 300 offshore mega wind turbines, the largest turbines commercially available. The Daily Telegraph newspaper in London reported the deal is worth around $3.6 billion.
Siemens, under the terms of the agreement, will design, manufacture, install and supply the turbines at selected offshore wind farms in the United Kingdom. DONG, in a statement, said the offshore wind regime in the region is 40 percent greater than onshore.
Both companies are working together on British, Danish and German wind project that have a combined capacity of 2,000 MW.
The United Kingdom is the world leader in offshore wind capacity. The country aims to generate 15 percent of its overall energy from renewable resources by 2020.
Two wind farms slated for the Norfolk coast means more than 6.6 gigawatts of offshore wind energy is online or under development in the country, the country's energy minister said in early July.
DONG Energy said the turbines would be installed at select offshore sites starting in 2014.
