Scotland, Emirates secure energy ties

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Scotland's energy and alternative resource sector is a good opportunity for investors in the gulf region, an official said following an Arab tour.

Scotish First Minister Alex Salmond wrapped up his five-day tour of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, reaching an agreement with alternative energy company Masdar.

Sultan Ahmad al-Jaber, chief executive of the energy company, said both sides would examine renewable energy at the university level.

"Scotland is a leading player in the renewable energy field and we are delighted to combine our knowledge and experience through this mutual and beneficial partnership," he said in a statement.

Details of the arrangement between utility company Scottish Enterprise and Masdar will be finalized by January, the Scottish government said.

Scotland aims to have 100 percent of its electricity demand met through renewable energy by 2020. Salmond said his country presented a lucrative opportunity in everything from education to renewable energy.

"I am confident that the Scottish government's commitment to capital investment for long-term growth will make Scotland an attractive partner for our friends in the gulf," he said.
