Oil spill reported in Alberta, Canada

CALGARY, Alberta, June 28 (UPI) -- An estimated 500 barrels of oil fluids spilled into a creek in Alberta, Canada, though regulators said there wasn't any immediate impact on area wildlife.

An explosion at an oil facility operated by Pengrowth Energy caused a mile-long pipeline to burst and spilled oil into the Judy Creek in north-central Alberta.

Wassem Khalil, a spokesman for the energy company, told the Calgary Herald only about 5 percent of the 500 barrels of fluid contained oil. The rest was water, he said.

"Our operations team identified the issue and emergency response was mobilized," he added.

Darin Barter, a spokesman for the Canadian Energy Resources Conservation Board, added the response effort was focused on containing the liquids. There was no observed impact on wildlife in the area, however.

Canadian regulators estimate 28,000 barrels of oil spilled from the Rainbow pipeline in Alberta in late April, making it the largest spill in the region since 1975.

Regulators stressed the Pengrowth incident wasn't anywhere near the site of the Rainbow spill.
