New energy needs new thinking

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Examining the future of energy requires world leaders to dream up inventive ways to protect the environment, a Spanish environment official said from Kenya.

World ministers overseeing their national environments met to discuss the transition to a low-carbon economy at the Nairobi, Kenya, headquarters of the U.N. Environment Program.

They said that an environmental conference in Brazil in 2012 provides a key opportunity to move quickly on the transitions needed to usher in a new green economic era.

They called on UNEP to back countries that were playing an active role in the green energy transition, complaining current efforts at the United Nations were insufficient and under-funded.

"The efforts to strengthen international environment governance should be about more than rationalization of fragmentation and seeking efficiencies," Spanish Environment Minister Rosa Aguilar Rivero said in a statement. "Instead it should be about re-envisioning and even dreaming about what is required institutionally for environment and sustainability and putting this in place."
