IAEA works on tracing water supplies

VIENNA, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Examining the link between water cycles and global climate variables is an important part of understanding warming trends, the IAEA said from Vienna.

The International Atomic Energy Agency described water as a "vital resource," adding it was looking to develop a comprehensive set of plans to help states develop sustainable water management initiatives.

The IAEA said its members were "expected" to increase the availability of water through best-management practices that recognize the importance of environmental sustainability, human security and climate change.

The nuclear agency said it was using naturally occurring radioactive isotopes to build water "fingerprints" that it said could help map the origin and flow of groundwater.

"A better understanding of the interactions between the Earth's water cycle and climate is important for adapting to climate change and variability," the agency said.
