U.N. agency goes green

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- The offices of the U.N. Environment Program in Kenya can cut its carbon footprint by 3 percent in part by cutting paper and air travel, the agency said.

UNEP said it was reducing its carbon footprint by cutting air travel for its employees and using green-energy practices at its offices in Nairobi.

The agency said in a statement the efforts could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3 percent over the next few years and save around $800,000 per year.

Air travel by UNEP employees accounts for 85 percent of the agency's carbon emissions. To reduce the environmental impact, the agency said employees would travel more by train and use the Internet for some meetings.

The environmental agency said it has been carbon neutral since 2008. UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said his agency was leading by example.

"These are bold ambitions for any organization with a workforce of over 1,000, offices across the world and a busy international calendar involving implementing projects and policies and working with governments and other partners across continents," he said in a statement.
