DHAKA, Bangladesh, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Bangladeshi State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Enamul Haque is urging the power sector to work for the good of the country.
Haque made his observations at a seminar on "Power Distribution System in Dhaka and Quality Service to Customers," hosted by the Dhaka Power Distribution Company and Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited, the New Nation newspaper reported Friday.
After thanking power sector officials for creating an increased awareness among consumers that helped reduce system loss, Haque said that said power distribution companies should carry out repairs on power supply lines and take steps to improve service standard on their own initiative rather than be prodded by the government.
Bangladesh's energy infrastructure remains minimal. Only 40 percent of the population currently has regular access to electricity, while per capita energy consumption at 136 kilowatt hours is one of the lowest rates in the world. The government sees increasing energy production as crucial to the country's prosperity.
