Norway, U.K. team up on energy

LONDON, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The Norwegian and British governments agreed to join forces on a common energy strategy that embraces both conventional and alternative energy.

Both governments, in a statement, said they would further develop a relationship with Norway acting as a natural gas supplier and the United Kingdom serving as a key gas consumer.

The joint statement recognized the importance of natural gas as a key component of energy security, adding both governments would work together on ways to prepare for any emergency gas supply disruptions.

Gas companies in the region are making plans to construct giant offshore storage facilities to hold natural gas.

The joint declaration from the Norwegian and British governments said resources in the North Sea could spawn growth in a green energy sector.

North Sea wind energy projects, the statement read, could provide a cheap energy source through bilateral technology sharing.

London's Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, a government regulator of natural gas and electricity, said the region faces a gas crisis by 2015.
