Gazprom responds to Turkish bombing

MOSCOW, July 22 (UPI) -- Gas supplies through the Blue Stream pipeline were increased to make up for an explosion on a pipeline linking Turkey to Iran, Russian gas company Gazprom said.

Militants with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, took responsibility for the bombing of a pipeline that carries gas from the Iranian border to the Turkish town of Dogubayazit near the eastern border with Iran.

At Turkey's request, Russian gas monopoly Gazprom said it was increasing the flow of gas through the Blue Stream pipeline from 490 million cubic feet to 775 million cubic feet per day, Russia's state-run news agency RIA Novosti reports.

Turkey's state-owned pipeline operator BOTAS said firefighters managed to control the blaze, though it would take around six days for the pipeline to resume normal operations.

Ankara said it could get more natural gas from suppliers in Azerbaijan as well.
