Flood waters reach Auschwitz

KRAKOW, Poland, May 20 (UPI) -- Water from flooding in Eastern Europe began pooling up on the floor of a former Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland, authorities said.

EU leaders said Polish, German and French officials sent water pumps to Poland to help stem the tide of heavy flooding in the region.

Heavy rains in Eastern Europe caused the Vistula River to break its banks in Krakow. Floodwaters reached a level of 33 feet in some areas, their highest levels in decades, German news agency Deutsche Welle reports.

Emergency responders in parts of Eastern and Central Europe were racing to save residents stranded by the floodwaters. Around 500 people were evacuated from central Poland and at least six people died in the Krakow floodwaters.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk complained that the emergency response to the flooding is chaotic.

"I cannot accept this," he said.

Polish authorities worried the rains would add an additional risk from mudslides.
