HONG KONG, April 19 (UPI) -- The China National Offshore Oil Corp. announced Monday a new oil discovery in Bohai Bay that had test flow rates of 540 barrels of oil per day.

Zhu Weilin, general manager for exploration at CNOOC, hailed the latest find as a significant development in the region.

"This discovery opens up a new prospect for exploration in Bohai Bay," he added.

CNOOC said it encountered an oil pay that was 250 feet thick in the PL9-1 discovery in eastern Bohai Bay. The well was drilled to 4,900 feet in a water depth of about 95 feet.

Test flows from the well reached an average of 540 barrels of oil per day.

CNOOC announced in March it uncovered oil in well BZ 3-2 in Bohai Bay in water depths of around 80 feet. That should reach peak production of around 4,800 barrels per day by the end of 2010 from seven wells, the company said.

CNOOC holds 100 percent interest and serves as the operator at both of the offshore fields.
