SOFIA, Bulgaria, March 10 (UPI) -- Bulgaria aims to meet 16 percent of its national energy consumption through renewable resources by 2020, the Bulgarian deputy finance minister said.
Deputy Finance Minister Evgeny Angelov said the government in Sofia is drafting a renewable energy act. The framework of that measure would involve government and private sector efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the official Sofia News Agency reports.
Sofia aims to provide 16 percent of its energy needs through renewable resources, he said. This includes the use of biofuels to meet 10 percent of the energy needs in the transport sector.
EU members in 2009 agreed to look to biofuels to meet 10 percent of the transport fuel needs by 2020. European lawmakers in February cautioned, however, that the use of biomass crops could lead to deforestation and cause increases in greenhouse gas production but said those matters were for international consideration.
Advocacy groups said food supplies are compromised by the rising demand for biofuels.
