Britons start green energy challenge

LONDON, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Fourteen British communities are competing in a yearlong contest to see who will become the greenest in the region, British Gas announced.

British Gas announced Monday it kicked off its Green Streets community energy challenge. The utility said it was backing the project to see which community can conserve the most energy, lower its carbon emissions and generate its own electricity most efficiently.

The 14 communities selected to take part in the Green Streets project are a test case for a community-based program to save energy through green technology.

"There is a groundswell of communities wanting to learn how to save money and go green by developing plans around saving and generating energy locally," said British adventure celebrity and green activist Ben Fogle. "Green Streets taps into this demand, and will help create a blueprint for building a more sustainable future."

The communities selected for the project will look to solar and wind power as various options to conserve energy.

The community that wins the Green Streets challenges gets more than $150,000 to invest in environmental projects.
