Enbridge responds to N. Dakota oil spill

HOUSTON, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Houston's Enbridge Energy Partners said it rerouted oil supplies through parallel pipelines while workers respond to a crude-oil spill in North Dakota.

Enbridge said it confirmed the spill Saturday when a control center reported the spill from Line 2b on the Enbridge Lakehead Pipeline System late Friday evening.

Enbridge said Line 2b would remain closed through Monday. Oil intended for Line 2b is transported through parallel lines while workers examine the ruptured line.

The company said Line 2b was closed immediately and isolated following the discovery of the spill. The line runs from Cromer in Canada's Manitoba province, to Superior, Wis.

Enbridge said it estimated the volume of the spill at 3,000 barrels of light crude oil. Its employees and contractors were on the site removing crude oil from the area. Enbridge stressed the spill was contained and posed no risk to water or wildlife.

Enbridge announced Jan. 5 an expansion of the North Dakota crude oil system went into service Jan. 1. The company added 91,000 barrels to the capacity of the North Dakota system, which connects with the Enbridge Lakehead mainline system and a Minnesota pipeline.

Pipeline regulators are investigating the cause of the leak along with Enbridge officials.
