RWE launches Polish wind farm

SUWALKI, Poland, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- German utility RWE announced it completed the final stage of its Suwalki wind farm that will increase Poland's wind energy generation by 10 percent.

RWE said it is time to put the wind farm into operation following the installation of the turbine and tower infrastructure. The 10 percent increase is from 2008 levels.

The utility company said the Suwalki wind farm would bring 80 million kilowatt hours of electricity to the Polish energy grid per year while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80,000 tons.

Poland expects its demand for renewable energy to double to 13.4 terawatt hours by 2010.

"The generation of electricity through renewable energy sources, like wind energy, plays a strategic role within the RWE generation mix," said stated Paul Coffey, chief operating officer RWE.

RWE said it plans to build another wind farm in Tychowo in northwest Poland by 2010. That wind farm includes 15 wind turbines.
