Romania boosts electricity exports

CHISINAU, Moldova, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Moldova's Cuciurgan power station has increased its generating capacity, allowing the country to export surplus electricity to Romania.

Infotag news agency reported Monday that during the period January-June the Cuciurgan power station generated 2,449 kilowatt-hours, more than doubling its power output over the same period of 2008, with 1,421 kilowatt-hours sold to foreign customers.

Unified Energy System of Russia joint-stock company (Inter RAO YeES) has owned the Cuciurgan facility since 2005 and recently invested $105 million in plant upgrades.

Inter RAO YeES spokesman Sergey Tolstoguzov told journalists, "This made it possible for the station to raise its capacities and achieve the historic maximum load of over 50 percent. The cost of electricity in Romania is rather attractive for us. We consider opportunities of moving forwards through Romania. We could start energy deliveries to Ukraine but it is hard to compete there as Ukraine has a big share of atomic power generation."
