Siemens adapts carbon-capture process

BERLIN, March 24 (UPI) -- Germany's Siemens Energy announced it will work to adapt its process for carbon dioxide capture to combined-cycle power plants.

The first plants the adaptation will take place in are those belonging to Norwegian utility Statkraft.

The project is expected to be complete by 2011.

"Technical innovations are the most important lever for combating climate change effectively," said Michael Suess, chief executive of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy.

Siemens is also working on a process to capture carbon dioxide from the flue gas of coal-fired power plants.

Flue gas from combined-cycle plants has a lower carbon dioxide concentration, and removal requires a different process than removal from coal plants.
