Nord Stream ecology issue for Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 10 (UPI) -- Sweden may put the environment on its agenda when it takes the European presidency in July, casting a possible shadow over the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

The Nord Stream AG pipeline consortium Monday submitted its environmental-impact assessment for the portion of the planned route through the Gulf of Finland.

Nord Stream would bring Russian natural gas to Germany through the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea. The project is plagued by environmental concerns from the littoral states along the route.

Russian Deputy Premier Viktor Zubkov said following a meeting with Swedish officials that Stockholm, however, was warming to the project, Russia Today reports.

Nord Stream would not travel through the territorial waters of Sweden, but it would run through its economic zone.

Sweden is expected to seek more information on the ecological impact of the project. The report said Sweden would take at least three months to vet any environmental assessments for the project.
