Russia to supply Ukraine with nuclear fuel

MOSCOW, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Ukraine's Fuel and Energy Ministry expects a contract with Russia on nuclear fuel supply will be signed soon.

Under the pending deal, Ukrainian nuclear power plants would be provided with Russian nuclear fuel, the Daily News Bulletin reported.

A Ukrainian ministry official said it is expected the agreement will be signed in February 2009.

If the deal is signed, Ukraine would fail to meet a target set by the Ukrainian-Russian Intergovernmental Committee for Economic Cooperation. The approved plan requires all Ukrainian-Russian deals that provide Ukraine with Russian nuclear fuel after 2008 to be signed before the end of the year.
