ExxonMobil releases energy outlook

IRVING, Texas, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Affordable energy and manageable greenhouse gas emissions are in the forecast in the energy sector for the next 20 years, ExxonMobil said.

In its report "Outlook for Energy: A View to 2030," ExxonMobil said data from nearly 100 countries and several sectors and resource types suggested there was a need to develop a cohesive strategy to match demand with environmental concerns.

"The world needs to meet the ever-growing need for reliable and affordable energy while minimizing the effects on the environment," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rex W. Tillerson.

The annual report for 2008 includes a new section examining energy efficiency and ways to manage the risk from greenhouse gas emissions.

"We must invest in the production of existing fuel sources, develop new sources of energy and create new technologies that will reduce the environmental footprint of energy production and use," Tillerson said.

Global energy demand should rise by an average of 1.2 percent per year, down slightly from the 2007 forecast of 1.3 percent, the report said.

The report said also that the demand for energy in China should more than double by 2030, besting demand in the United States by more than 30 percent.
