Poland to push for Odessa-Brody link

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Poland has warmed to the opportunity to cooperate with Azerbaijan in the energy sector ahead of a regional summit in Baku in November, officials said Thursday.

The Polish ambassador to Azerbaijan, Kshishtof Kraevski, said he felt positive about the chance to bring the Odessa-Brody crude oil pipeline from Ukraine on to the Polish port of Gdansk, the Azeri press agency Today.Az reported.

"We hope that the issue of the Odessa-Brody-Gdansk pipeline will be settled at the Baku summit," he said.

The presidents of Azerbaijan, Poland, Georgia, Ukraine and Lithuania agreed with representatives from Kazakhstan in 2007 to construct an Odessa-Brody link to Gdansk.

The Baku meeting follows an earlier energy summit in Krakow, where the leaders made the Gdansk pledge.

For his part, Lithuanian ambassador to Azerbaijan Kestutis Kudzmanas said leaders will meet on the sidelines of the Baku summit to move forward on the pipeline plans and discuss broader issues with Azerbaijan concerning the energy security of European member states.

"Lithuania is an active introducer of (the European Union) Energy Security Strategy, and Azerbaijan is a very stable partner as an alternative power supplier," the ambassador said.
